Why IPTV guides break

EPG data from user-added IPTV playlists is notoriously unreliable. Here's why guide matching often fails without help:

  • Channel IDs do not always match EPG IDs
  • Playlists use variant suffixes like @SD, @HD, @English
  • XMLTV files can be enormous — hundreds of megabytes
  • Some channels have no matching guide data at all
  • Display names are inconsistent across sources

Guide matching in practice

Guide Cloud is designed to handle the real-world messiness of user-added IPTV playlists.

In one internal test with a user-added iptv-org-style playlist, Guide Cloud matched 838 of 2,983 channel entries to guide metadata — approximately 28% guide coverage from a large public playlist. Of those matches, 807 were auto-confirmed and 31 were suggested for manual review.
